Meeting an author or illustrator can encourage a student’s creativity and build a love of reading from a young age. My debut picture book Santiago and Great Bear, is publishing on June 30, 2026, and I can’t wait to share it with your school!
One of my favorite things about being an illustrator and author is that I get to share both the drawing side of the industry, how to design characters and the writing side, how to come up with ideas for stories. The most important thing to learn is that drawing and writing takes practice and persistence. Children really do make the best story tellers. I have two kids of my own and I know from experience.
What type of workshop do you offer?
My picture book is designed for ages 4-8, grades TK-3rd. For the younger grades, TK-1, I will do a reading from my picture book Santiago and Great Bear. Then I will offer a Q&A on the book where the students can have the opportunity to win a small prize. I will also answer questions such as,”Where do I get my ideas?” or “How do I make my illustrations?” Finally I will show the students a step by step of how to draw Great Bear. For grades 2-3, the format will be similar but we can also dive into questions about Procreate, the app that I use for drawing, “What does my studio look like?” “What am I working on now?” or “What’s coming next?” This is a chance for the students to see how I work day to day and the media that I use.
Will you sign books?
Yes! Book signings are a big part of an author or illustrator’s visit. If you would like to purchase books for the signing, I recommend contacting your local indie bookseller. You can order from the booksellers in advance. I will autograph any book that the school orders however it’s best to allow time at the end of the workshop for book signings.
Please reach out for information regarding my fee or honorarium. The best way to contact me is through my email at ljhancock.artist@gmail.com I can provide my phone number, upon request.
I’m looking forward to sharing my love of the natural world, science, illustration and writing stories with your school!
