Sidewalk Art Competition

Today was the first (ever in history) LODA Squares, Sidewalk Art Competition in Mobile, AL. It was hosted by the Mobile Arts Council (http://mobilearts.org) in conjunction with the SouthSounds music festival/art market and sponsored by several local businesses. I was sponsored by Folkers Windows (thank you!) The artists were asked to draw from 11:00 – 3:00 and the People’s Choice voting began at 3:00 pm.

I had a great time working along side 15 other artists at the Cathedral Square. We could not have asked for better weather with the high around 72 degrees and a nice breeze blowing through all day long.

Thank you to all who came out to support the arts (and me). It really meant a lot to see some familiar faces. 😉 I had so much fun and I won first place!

The Art of Teaching

The USA Visual Arts Faculty is exhibiting work at the Eastern Shore Arts Center in Fairhope, AL for the month of April. I have one piece in the show! I just got back from the First Friday Art Walk and we had a great turnout. Everyone’s work looks wonderful and it is definitely worth seeing, if I do say so myself. If you happen to be over there, stop by and check it out. The work comes down on April 25 so you have plenty of time! You can make a day of it and walk down to Page and Palette and get lunch at Panini Pete’s (my new favorite lunch place)! USA-slider-APR15

Pieces of Sand

Sand 15" x 23" Watercolor on 400lb Coldpress Paper
Sand 15″ x 23″ Watercolor on 400lb Coldpress Paper

This is a watercolor portrait of my daughter that I just finished! I’ve been working on it for a couple months. My goal in this piece is to capture the sensory experience of discovering sand for the first time. I plan to document several of her “first discoveries” through watercolor. I’m playing with the idea of contrasting lost and found edges to convey the idea of ephemeral memories.

Back in the Swing of Things

Its been tough to concentrate on anything (much less art related) with a new baby. Now that my little one has started taking longer naps, I feel like I can get something accomplished. She still naps for 30 minutes but every now and then I get an hour or two. I am hoping that this time its “an hour or two” so I can put some more layers on this little guy.

I started this watercolor about a year ago as a demo for a watercolor course that I was teaching. This is an 18″ x 24″ portrait of my god son. I hope to finish it soon so I can ship it out to his Mama. I will post the finished work when its complete. Hopefully sooner rather than later. 😉 Jack
